Hormones play a crucial role in milk production — but they can’t create or maintain milk supply without milk removal.
🧬 Hormones Involved in Milk Production:
1. Prolactin
Role: Signals the breasts to make milk.
👉🏼Triggered by: Ni**le stimulation and milk removal (baby nursing, pumping, hand expression).
👉🏼Higher levels = more milk production, but only if milk is being emptied.
2. Oxytocin
Role: Triggers let-down (milk ejection) so milk flows to the baby or pump.
👉🏼Triggered by: Skin-to-skin, baby crying, cuddling, and suckling.
3. Estrogen & Progesterone
👉🏼During pregnancy: These hormones are high and prevent full milk production.
👉🏼After birth: Their drop (especially progesterone) triggers the start of milk production (lactogenesis II).
👉🏼But: If milk isn’t removed after birth, supply won’t be maintained.
4. Thyroid hormones, insulin, cortisol
💕These support overall metabolism and milk synthesis — imbalances can impact supply.
👉🏼Still, regular milk removal is needed.
🧾 Bottom Line:
✅ Hormones start and support milk production.
❌ But without consistent milk removal, even perfect hormones won’t keep milk flowing.
😱If your hormones are off, it can cause low milk supply or oversupply! 😭 — but it still doesn’t change this key fact:
🚨 Milk removal is always required to build or maintain supply. Even with hormonal imbalances, without milk removal, milk won’t be made or maintained.
