This weekend’s forecast features three major weather stories across the United States:
⚠️ 1. Severe weather returns to the Plains and Midwest on Saturday
Thunderstorms capable of damaging winds, large hail, torrential downpours, and isolated tornadoes are expected from parts of Kansas and Missouri into Iowa and Illinois. Kansas City is under a moderate risk for severe weather, and portions of that area could be upgraded if conditions become more favorable.
A separate severe weather threat will also develop across the eastern Carolinas with the potential for localized damaging winds and hail.
⚠️ 2. Severe storms shift east Sunday
On Sunday, thunderstorms could impact major Northeast cities along the I-95 corridor, including Washington, Philadelphia, New York City, and surrounding areas. Damaging wind gusts and flooding downpours will be the primary concerns.
Another area of severe weather may develop from Oklahoma into Arkansas later Sunday.
🌧️ 3. Flash flood threat increasing along the Gulf Coast
While the chance for tropical development in the Gulf remains low, tropical moisture is expected to spread from Texas into Louisiana and the lower Mississippi Valley. Widespread rainfall totals of 2-4 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible.
The biggest flood concern is from South Texas and the Hill Country into parts of Louisiana and Mississippi, where repeated rounds of rain could trigger flash flooding. The AccuWeather Local StormMax™ rainfall amount is 12 inches through Monday.
🌡️ Bonus story: Record-challenging heat in the Pacific Northwest
Temperatures will soar this weekend across Oregon and Washington. Portland is forecast to reach 95°, while Eugene and Salem could approach 97°, challenging or breaking daily records.
No matter where your weekend plans take you, stay weather-aware and keep an eye on the forecast, especially if you’re in a severe weather or flood-prone area.
And unfortunately there’s more severe weather on the way this weekend and next week
