Wayne T. Sanderson has been named a 2026-27 University Research Professor.

A researcher and professor in the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Sanderson leads research focused on preventing occupational and environmental injuries and diseases, with work spanning respiratory health, cancer, infectious diseases and more. His research centers bring more than $3 million annually to UK for research and student training.

In a new Q&A, Sanderson shares why this recognition is meaningful, how students continue to inspire his work and the impact his research strives to make on the health and safety of communities across Kentucky and beyond.

Preventing tick bites is the best way to protect against Lyme disease. Use EPA-registered insect repellents when you're outside and reapply according to the label. A layered approach including long-sleeved clothing and tick checks can also help.
