On Monday, May 4, the Lincoln City Council will hold a public hearing on Councilmember James Michael Bowers’ proposal to ensure that Lincolnites are paid a fair wage by restoring the wage protections the state legislature recently removed.

In 2022, almost 60% of Nebraska voters – and 7 out of 10 Lincoln voters – approved the Raise the Wage Nebraska ballot measure to increase Nebraska’s minimum wage, and to ensure our wages continue to grow as the cost of living increases.

Unfortunately, during this past legislative session, state lawmakers rolled back these popular wage protections in two harmful ways: (1) they created a subminimum wage for youth workers, who often are working to provide vital income for their families, and (2) they restricted the annual wage adjustments and all but ensured that Nebraska’s wages over time will once again fail to keep pace with rising costs.

This ordinance would restore the wage laws Lincolnites so broadly supported by ensuring youth workers are paid a fair wage and removing the harmful cap on annual cost of living increases for workers in Lincoln.

Last year, Nebraskans came together to tell the Legislature ⛔ HANDS OFF ⛔ our voter-approved minimum wage law.

Now, ❌LB258 (Raybould) – a bill that will harm workers by severely weakening Nebraska’s minimum wage law by carving out a subminimum wage for young workers AND placing a harmful cap on the cost of living increases that 58% of Nebraskans voted for – is back.

📉 If passed as is, young workers would see a pay decrease from $15/hour to $13.50/hour, and would not see a raise in their minimum wage until 2030. On top of that, the restrictive new cap on the annual adjustments we voted for would cause Nebraska’s wages to once again fall behind the cost of living.

📅 LB258 could be up for Final Reading as soon as this Friday, Feb 6!

ICYMI: Nebraskans came together in 2022 to make sure that our state has a minimum wage that values our labor regardless of age AND ensures that wages do not once again fall behind the cost of living. We must continue the fight to protect this voter-approved law in 2026.

Over the past few years, Nebraskans have collected signatures for initiatives that have provided meaningful change for hardworking Nebraskans and their families, communities, businesses, and our economy.

Unfortunately, LB 1090 would make the initiative process less accessible to Nebraskans who would like to collect signatures in their community on an initiative they deeply care about. This bill would require every person to file an affidavit before they collect signatures and attest that they have not been convicted of or pled guilty to a felony, and prohibits Nebraskans from being able to collect signatures if they have a past felony conviction.

LB1090 would substantially limit participation in a fundamental part of our state’s democracy for every Nebraskan who wants to collect signatures. Ballot initiatives are an important tool of civic life, and we should not place additional burdens that would chill participation in signature collection, an essential part of the initiative process!
