Wet Carpet is a common problem this time of year. I spend countless hours helping people with mini disasters and large ones. Often times people get water in their basements and it is an unfortunate event that can sometimes be avoided.

I will share some of the scenarios that I have encountered over the years that may save you from seeing me come to replace wet pad, and have to reinstall or replace your carpet. Which in turn saves dollars and headaches.

Most of the time wet basements caused by outside water can be avoided by making sure all water is diverted by getting it away from your house as far and fast as possible. Some of the things that will help you accomplish this:

1. Make sure the ground around your house slopes at least 4 inches down at 4 ft out away from your foundation... mulch doesnt count! Sometimes you need to check under decks and porches also if it’s an area that can get water along the foundation.

2. Gutters, are clean, can handle enough rain, and down spouts have extensions or hoses that get the water far enough from the foundation

3. Window wells, egresses have covers and or drains

4. Sump pumps are in good working condition, have back up pumps, or battery back up in case of power outage.

5. Make sure concrete around houses doesn’t slope towards the foundation.

6. Make sure the kids and the man of the house doesn’t leave the hose turned on along the house or window wells.... we know the women of the house would not do this but us men and kids do quite often!

These are a few of the problems that we all need to keep an eye on not only during spring but all times of year in Nebraska. I will discuss inside water problem and winter frozen pipes at another time.

Hopefully this will save some of you some unfortunate home headaches and money.
