Since August 2016, ✨500,000✨ pages of the Freedmen's Bureau records have been successfully transcribed on the Smithsonian Transcription Center, thanks to the incredible efforts of our 50,000 #volunpeers – volunteers who have supported this project over the years, meticulously transcribing and reviewing Smithsonian collections. The Freedmen’s Bureau Transcription Project is the largest crowd sourcing initiative ever sponsored by the Smithsonian in its 178-year existence. These one of kind historical documents illustrate the history of Reconstruction and the experiences of newly freed African American families and communities and now are fully searchable for all on the Freedmen’s Bureau Search Portal website. The Portal allows you to effortlessly travel through the story of African American life during the Reconstruction era.
