Indoor Hanging Chairs or Swings: Yay or Nay?

I’m sure we’ve all seen the ever popular egg chair, porch swings, or even novelty swings around a table in a restaurant. Most of the time swinging seating is a feature that’s left in the great outdoors. In the past several years, however, indoor hanging chairs or swings have gained popularity in the design world. So what are your thoughts? Would you bring hanging chairs or swings inside your home?

Yay:
* Lends a sense of fun and quirkiness to the design of your room
* Swinging provides a sensation of comfort and can be helpful for soothing anxious nervous systems of all ages
* Your kids will love it, and their friends will, too! (which means you’ll know exactly where they are)

Nay:
* Requires a sturdy chain and hanging system. You’ll definitely need the help of a professional at a hardware store to send you in the correct direction of safe and sturdy hanging mechanisms and appropriate anchors to support human weight
* You’ll likely be limited on where you’re able to hang it, as you’ll need to hang in a beam for safety
* If you have more than one child, you may need more than one…to prevent fights 🙃

Let me tell you about my Blind Date—2

I’m sure we’ve all been here: you’re trying to save money on a project, and decide to do it yourself. But in the process, the materials you saved money on turn out to be the wrong materials for the job, and you eventually end up spending double to get it done.

I got a call from a client who had exactly that happen to her. In an attempt to save on fabric costs, she purchased some beautiful drapes overseas while visiting family and friends. When the drapes arrived, they were folded and the fabric had a very strong smell. She dry cleaned the drapes only to discover that there were permanent creases, and none of them fit her windows properly. We ended up having to start from scratch, selecting new fabric and having the drapes custom made to fit her windows. It was one of those live and learn situations that we’ve all experienced ourselves: if she’d only started here, it would have saved her money and quite a few headaches.

I like to share my knowledge with you so these kinds of things don’t happen to my clients. Laundry Room Design & Organization Tips

When it comes to the laundry room/closet, I find that it’s often an overlooked space. Clothes and supplies strewn haphazardly about doesn’t make for a feeling of peace when doing laundry. And let’s be honest: that’s not always a task that is the most enjoyable. Of course it doesn’t have to be a designer workshop, but there are several things you can do to make the room more visually appealing and useful. Function is more important than form in this space, but it doesn’t mean it can’t look more aesthetically pleasing.

* Continue the color story from the room next to the laundry
There’s no need to create an entirely new design in this space. Simply use the same paint and accent colors from the space directly next to the laundry room. It will give the room a more cohesive look, especially if there isn’t a door to close the room off from the rest of the house.

* Focus on useful storage
Putting in some shelving units to hold all the various items needed for laundry will be a life saver for the cleanliness of your room. Be sure to consider where you will store your baskets, cleaning supplies, hangers, clothespins, and fold the clothes once they are clean.

* Use large glass jars, and wicker or wire baskets to hold your supplies
Having your supplies neatly organized will go a long way in making the space feel more designer, and remain looking clean. Furthermore, you’ll be able to easily see everything you need, so no more searching for those new supplies you know you put in here somewhere…

* Be consistent with brands you buy (or make your own cleaners)
While labels on cleaning supplies aren’t made to look pretty, it looks much more pleasing to the eye when the brands/colors of bottles are all the same. If you stick to one brand, even looking at your the supplies will be more peaceful. Or, go the extra mile like I do, and make your own! It’s easy, inexpensive, and natural. Plus, it looks amazing organized in glass containers because it doesn’t stand out like a big orange bottle would.

* Everything should match
This tip may seem foolish, but the reason many laundry rooms look haphazard is because all of the supplies of various colors. By choosing a neutral color palette for things like a broom and dustpan, and continuing to buy supplies in that neutral shade, the room looks less chaotic and more visually appealing.

While you certainly don’t need to invest a lot of time or money in your laundry room, I hope these tips will help you to make it a more welcoming room in your home. We sure spend enough time in there; may as well make it a place we enjoy being!
