5 Common Myths About Weight Training for Youth Athletes
Let’s clear this up. Strength training doesn’t hurt kids—it helps them when done right.

At Brick by Brick, we believe in educating both athletes and parents so development isn’t delayed by misinformation. Each slide in this post breaks down a common myth that’s holding young athletes back.

Slide 1:
“Weight training stunts growth.”
False. There’s no science to back this. In fact, proper strength training supports bone density, muscular strength, and even growth by balancing hormones and reinforcing good movement patterns.

Slide 2:
“Kids should wait until puberty to lift.”
Not true. With emotional maturity and proper supervision, kids as young as 7–8 can start resistance training safely—starting with movement quality and bodyweight control.

Slide 3:
“Weightlifting is dangerous for kids.”
Only if done wrong. Injury rates in supervised youth training are actually lower than most sports. The danger comes from bad programming—not the barbell.

Slide 4:
“Strength training makes kids bulky and slow.”
Young athletes don’t produce enough testosterone to get bulky. What it does improve: speed, coordination, power, and injury resilience.

Slide 5:
“All strength programs work the same for kids.”
That’s a recipe for setbacks. Programs must be individualized and based on biological age, not just chronological age. A 14-year-old freshman shouldn’t be training the same as an 11-year-old beginner.

Final Slide:
Don’t let these myths block your child’s potential. When done right, strength training builds a stronger, faster, and more resilient athlete—on and off the court.
