We've received multiple reports in recent days of people having bonfires on the beach in our study area. Beach bonfires are not allowed during turtle nesting season!
Fires pose serious risks to sea turtle nests and hatchlings. A turtle nest could be underneath where a bonfire is built, and that nest would be totally destroyed. (Remember, not all nests are marked with signs on our beaches.) If hatchlings emerge near a burning fire, they will follow their normal program to go towards the brightest light source and be killed by the fire. Not to mention nesting turtles scared off because of the bright light and visible people around the fire!
