We so often remember Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in moments of struggle: at the podium, in the march, under enormous pressure. But here, we see something else just as powerful.

Joy.

It's a reminder that hope can live alongside struggle, and that joy does not erase the work. It sustains it. That smile reminds us that hope isn’t soft or passive. It’s resilient. It laughs. It rests when it can, and then it gets back to work. Dr. King’s leadership was rooted in an unshakable belief that a more just America was not only necessary, but possible. That belief required discipline, courage, and imagination.

As we reflect today, we’re reminded that the work of justice isn’t only fueled by anger at what’s wrong, but by love for what could be.

May we hold onto that kind of hope. The kind that keeps us human, keeps us grounded, and keeps us moving forward together.
