This started to get comfortable enough to play! , like all mammals, have a nervous system that is constantly scanning the environment for safety or threat. Stephen Porges calls this neuroception. It happens below conscious awareness. When an animal (or person) detects safety, the ventral vagal state activates and that’s where and social bonding live. Eventually they started to get comfortable with the idea that even though we had predator eyes, we were not going to treat them like prey. With equines (and people) it’s important to develop psychological safety before you add pressure or you’ll stunt your relationship and the learner’s progress. 🐴

Pretending you're a rock ( ) is a way to calm down quickly.
Why it works: Lowers cortisol, boosts serotonin, and brings a sense of calm—without you having to say, “Ummm” for hours.
How to do it: Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and observe your thoughts without judgment for 5–10 minutes. If the thought of meditation stresses you out (oh, the irony), try a quick body scan. Just remember, your goal isn’t to empty your mind, it’s just to keep yourself from flipping tables.
