Since 1979, the Cave Dogs have played a competitive brand of men's recreation softball. The team has enjoyed remarkable continuity of roster over the years.

The email I sent out today to the team.....

Dogs,

After much consideration during the off season, I have decided NOT to return to either play nor run the team for what would be the Cave Dogs 40th season. That said, we are working to ensure there will be a 40th season, so stay tuned.

After 27 years playing with the Cave Dogs, of which 17 have been administrating the team, I have decided that I am just no longer getting the enjoyment out of it for the time I put into it. I can no longer play the game at the level that is satisfying to me nor do I think I contribute to the team in a way that justifies the line-up spot I want. My ankles have slowed me to a feeble crawl and are not getting any better. Last year, I sold my business, which has me essentially restructuring many aspects of my life. Deciding to hang them up was just one of my many introspective conclusions.

I will continue to attend a few games each year and enjoy the camaraderie of the post-game bar. I am also available, from time to time if you are really short on players. Otherwise, it has been one of my life’s great blessings to have had this great home to exercise my softball addiction for so long. The Cave Dogs have been the source of some of my fondest memories and best friendships. One of the best aspects of this team has been that we always show up and show up with great attitudes. Please keep that going!

Again, I do expect us to continue to play. Look for another e-mail in the next couple of weeks from Gary, Richie, I or another Cave Dog delineating next steps. Please join me in wishing continued success for the team.

The Cave Dogs scouting their next opponent, Old Chicago Lakewood. The homework paid off as the Dogs slipped by previously undefeated Old Chicago to land the number #1 seed in the playoffs, which begins, for Dogs, at 8:05P at the Schaefer Sports Complex (Hampden and Kipling). The Dogs play the winner of Hawks v Abba-Zabba, a 6:15 game. Gates open for tailgating at..... well, the gates actually never close.

The Dog Days of August: The Cave Dogs have concluded the regular season with an 8-1 record and 1st place in the 11 team Clement Park Monday Night League. They knocked off previously undefeated Old Chicago - Lakewood (now 8-1) 16-15 during the 9:00PM game on Monday. So the Dogs have the satisfaction of winning the regular season, but must defend that lofty status in a multi-round playoff which begins Aug 22. The Dogs hold the #1 seed.

The 4-0 Dogs (3-0 officially) handled the Sliders (now 2-2), rendering a 19-4 thumping on Monday night. The Dogs will take on a tough Base Invaders (4-1) at 6:15PM on Clement #1, followed by a match-up with the Alcoballics (0-4) at 7:10PM.

The Dogs also have a double-header on August 1 (the following week.) The next 4 games over 2 weeks should help us to see if the Dogs have legit championship potential in this year's Foothills Summer League.
