Our partners at Munters are leaders in data center cooling, and their approaches often differ from other manufacturers. In one of our weekly Coffee Break webinars, Munters joined us to discuss Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) in data centers. They explained a Munters-specific alternative strategy that integrates refrigerant-based cooling architectures with liquid-cooled racks – something not usually seen in DLC.

Check out the clip below for a breakdown of their strategy and to see how it provides better free cooling and reduces infrastructure.

ASHRAE 62.1 is the “Standards for Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality,” and sets minimum requirements on ventilation and IAQ so as to reduce occupant exposure to air pollutants that affect health. To be in compliance, you must declare one of the three compliance paths as approved in the standard:
1. Ventilation Rate Procedure (VRP) – a prescriptive method that calculates the needed outside air based on the number of people, the use of space, and facility type.
2. IAQ Procedure (IAQP) – a performance-based method that allows you to reduce the amount of outside air used by implementing systems that reduce air pollutants and identified contaminants.
3. Natural Ventilation Procedure (NVP) – uses windows, vents, doors, and gaps in the building to provide natural outside air, and requires buildings to meet strict criteria for authorization of use.
What’s right for one building may not be right for another. When picking the best ASHRAE 62.1 compliance path for your building, it’s important to consider the pros and cons of each and apply them to the size, occupancy-levels, and needs of your building.

Direct-to-chip (DTC) cooling only works at scale because of coolant distribution units (CDUs). CDUs utilize a closed-loop system for heat removal in data centers with limited space and high heat generation. They are the key to successful DTC cooling and contribute to greater thermal management, energy efficiency, PUE standards, and scalability.

Here’s a quick video showcasing their functions.

In the final of our series of maintenance tasking for HVAC equipment, General Foreman Chris Crosset details some simple steps facility managers can perform on their air handling units. With the hot summer months approaching, you want to make sure your AHU is up to speed and can keep you cool through the season. If you’re unsure about any of these tasks or think your AHU needs more in-depth maintenance, reach out to your local LONG HVAC service team!
