Satellite downlink systems carry intelligence, communications, and reconnaissance data from orbit to the ground. The components doing that job have to survive temperature swings of several hundred degrees, constant radiation, and years of operation with no maintenance windows.

There is no margin for error.

Manufacturing for these systems requires a specific combination of capabilities:
✅ CNC-machined RF shield housings with standard tolerances of ±0.25 mm (±0.010") and precision fits for consistent RF seal integrity
✅ FIP gasket dispensing for conductive elastomer seals that hold up across thermal cycling and launch vibration
✅ Coatings that control emissivity, resist corrosion, and optimize RF performance across the mission life
✅ Vertical integration, because multi-vendor procurement adds weeks a compressed schedule cannot absorb

The procurement strategy matters as much as the specs. A vertically integrated partner moves a housing from machining to plating to FIP dispensing without the part leaving the building, under a single quality system the entire way.

MILSATCOM isn't a place for "good enough" manufacturing.

When warfighters lose satellite comms in a contested environment, they lose situational awareness. The components holding those links together need to survive thermal cycling from -65°C to +125°C, hard vacuum, radiation exposure, and still maintain the shielding effectiveness that keeps adversaries out.

That means your manufacturing partner needs to bring more than just capability. They need:

✅ CMMC Level 2 certification to handle CUI without putting your program at risk
✅ ITAR registration and the compliance infrastructure to back it up
✅ AS9100 quality management, not just a certificate on the wall, but traceability through every step of production
✅ Vertical integration across CNC machining, FIP dispensing, RF shielding, thermal management, and coatings, because coordinating five vendors on a defense program schedule is a risk you don't need

We put together an engineering guide covering what MILSATCOM component manufacturing actually requires, from DFARS specialty metals compliance to material selection for space environments.
