Neighborhood runoff dumps into retaining ditch in the customers back yard where at the bottom of a 6 ft manhole contains a 240 volt high volume sump pump that pumps the runoff into the lake 20 feet away. Customer stated when the sump fails water backs up and floods and submerges the electrical junction box and shorts out the wiring. After testing the float switches, pump resistance and wiring no electrical shorts were located. Bypassed float switches and energized, the pumps ampacity exceeded the nameplate current with no load. Extracted the pump from the man hole which I was not prepared for. The culprit a stick lodged in the pump housing. Installed some wire mesh over the pump intake port and reinstalled and tested. Works like a charm. We also relocated some wild life back into the lake in the process.
