Have you ever wondered what the best way to drink a wine is? All kidding aside, letting a red wine breath will reduce any harshness and bring out a more velvety texture by softening down the tannins. Generally a red wine should be opened an hour before drinking, however, just opening a bottle of wine doesn't always guarantee it's breathability. it’s much more useful to decant it into another vessel, this will ensure it separates the sediment from the liquid.
