Our second display case has something special inside this month…a time capsule from the East Texas Chamber of Commerce!

The organization was formed in 1926.
On March 24, 1926, they met on the courthouse lawn and decided to commemorate the spot with a time capsule and marker when their 50th anniversary came about.

The first board meeting was held in Longview on April 19, 1926.

The time capsule was placed in the ground on April 8, 1976, to mark the first 50 years of the chamber’s efforts to encourage industrial, agricultural, and tourism development in the surrounding seventy-one East Texas counties.

It was opened in April this year on the organization's 100th anniversary.

The chamber has since merged into the Texas Chamber of Commerce in 1988, and subsequently, that organization merged into the Texas Association of Business in 1995.

The time capsule contains various East Texas Chamber of Commerce and Longview memorabilia, photos, and artifacts.

Come stop by and see a bit of local history before it swaps out at the end of the month.

We also encourage you to utilize our local history room and work with the genealogy librarian on any research and ancestry projects that you might have come into your life!
