It’s a fact!
While African and West Indian manatees, including the Florida manatee, have fingernails on each flipper, the closely related Amazonian manatee and Dugong do not. Since the nails have not been preserved in fossils, scientists are unsure when or why this difference occurred. One theory is that the nails help protect the flippers from abrasion when the animals use them to ‘walk’ along the sea bottom, as West Indian and African manatees sometimes do, and the other species may do so less frequently. Yesterday, Save the Manatee Club and Clean Water Coalition came together to remove 269.2 pounds of trash from Blue Spring State Park and French Landing Boat Ramp 🚮🗑️💪
While both of these areas are frequented and loved by locals and visitors from all over the world, this is also home to our local manatees. Which includes 3 brand new babies born this summer! 😍🍼
Every piece of trash removed was a potential threat to these manatees, along with all of the other wildlife that call this section of the St. John’s River, home 🏡
We challenge you all to not only continue on with Plastic Free July, but to make it a lifelong practice to go plastic free when visiting Florida’s waterways 🩵
