Happy Giving Thanks to Indigenous People 🖤

Traditions can change. We could be grateful for all that we have, everyday. No one is preventing you from doing just that.

I hope that, as you spend time with your family and/or friends, you’ll also carve out time to talk about the truth of this day. A 2019 Time magazine article stated: “The first official mention of a “Thanksgiving” celebration occurs in 1637, after the colonists brutally massacre an entire Pequot village, then subsequently celebrate their barbaric victory.”

I don’t want us to gloss over history or make excuses like, “Thanksgiving has a different meaning to me,” or “We have made it our own tradition.” That seems irresponsible. If it’s truly your own, are you still eating colonialism food?

Maybe try to make a recipe from an Indigenous chef (link in bio), put on a documentary to educate yourself and the family more (‘Great Dying’ is one you could try), learn about the indigenous land you occupy, and give back to their community.
