THE RIVER THAT WOULD NOT LET GO
The frozen canyon trembled under the fury of glacial floodwaters, surging endlessly between jagged black stone and snow-covered cliffs. Ice-cold winds screamed through the mountain pass while raging whitewater erupted upward like trapped avalanches bursting from the river below.
Everything felt alive.
And hungry.
Nineteen-year-old Riley Hart carefully made her way across a narrow fallen tree stretched precariously above the violent current. Freezing spray soaked through her denim-blue winter jacket, and her braided brown hair clung to her skin. Every step demanded absolute focus—one mistake meant disaster.
Beside her moved Shadow.
A large German Shepherd, outfitted with a reinforced black rescue harness secured by heavy steel clips. His soaked brown-and-black fur shook violently in the icy wind as he searched desperately for balance on the slick, unstable log.
“Easy…” Riley whispered, her voice trembling. “We’re almost there.”
But the river below only grew louder.
Then it happened.
Shadow slipped.
His hind legs lost grip on the wet bark in an instant.
Riley’s scream tore through the canyon as the dog slid off the narrow bridge and plunged toward the raging flood below.
Only the harness saved him.
A steel clip caught on a broken branch jutting from the trunk, stopping his fall just in time.
Now Shadow hung suspended above the roaring glacier torrent, battered by freezing spray as the river tried relentlessly to pull him down.
He barked in panic.
Scrambled desperately against the wood.
“Shadow!”
Without hesitation, Riley threw herself onto the unstable trunk. Her gloved hands seized the harness strap with all her strength.
The impact nearly dragged her in as well.
Whitewater exploded around them. The tree groaned under the combined weight, threatening to collapse at any second.
Below her, Shadow whined in terror, his body slamming against the canyon wall as the current pulled violently at him.
Riley’s arms shook from strain.
Ice-cold spray blinded her eyes.
But she refused to release her grip.
“Hold on!” she cried out. “Don’t let go!”
Her voice was nearly swallowed by the roar of the flood.
