Students actively participate in excavation and finds processing under field or laboratory supervision. They use tools and documentation after verbal instructions and observing team members. Interested in conservation join field conservation efforts under the project conservator. Weekly lectures cover regional history and excavation research. Students collaborate with architectural remains, mosaics, frescoes, installations, and portable finds. Honorary and MA thesis students can explore research subjects aligned with their interests and goals.

Archaeologists use drafting paper, also known as tracing paper, vellum, or permatrace, to create drawings that are an important part of their record-keeping process. These drawings help archaeologists understand and assess their excavations after digging, and also help others understand what the archaeologist saw. Despite the ability to scan or photograph objects, archaeologists still make drawings of the objects they find. This is because a drawing provides a certain level of interpretation based on methods of documenting knowledge of the artifact that a camera or computer cannot convey.
