Setting the Record Straight on PMBOK 8: It's Not a "Rollback" to 6.
As we gear up for the PMI Global Summit in Phoenix, I've seen the "it's just a mix of 6 and 7" comments about the new PMBOK® Guide.

Having seen a preview (pages 255-259, as attached), I can tell you this is a severe misunderstanding.

This is not a rollback. It's an evolution.

PMBOK 8 keeps the principle-based and performance domain foundation of PMBOK 7. It doesn't go back to the rigid, prescriptive nature of 6.

Instead, it simplifies and clarifies the principles of 7 and smartly re-integrates the 5 process groups (which were in a separate guide) as flexible, non-prescriptive anchors. These "Focus Areas" now support the performance domains, finally connecting the "why," "what," and "when" of project management.

This was a massive, evidence-based effort with 12,900+ public comments. It's not a step back; it's the coherent system we asked for.
