We are pleased to welcome bamboo rod builder Yudai Mochizuki back to Tortoise for the second edition of FLYFISHING CRAFTS by Yudai Maker.

As summer settles across California, many of us find ourselves paying closer attention to the spaces we inhabit, the landscapes we move through, and the objects we choose to live with. Whether in architecture, design, or craft, the most enduring works often deepen our relationship to the natural world rather than separate us from it. They encourage us to observe more carefully, appreciate the character of a place, and engage more fully with the environments that surround us.

This July, we are pleased to welcome bamboo rod builder Yudai Mochizuki back to Tortoise for the second edition of FLYFISHING CRAFTS by Yudai Maker, alongside returning guest Nobuyuki Sugito, founder of COMPASS and curator of vintage fly-fishing treasures sourced from around the world.

The Corn Tenugui 🌽returns each year as part of Kamawanu’s seasonal collection, inspired by one of Japan’s most iconic summer foods. From countryside harvests to festival food stalls, corn is a cherished symbol of the season. Yaki Tomorokoshi—grilled corn glazed with soy sauce—is a beloved summer snack enjoyed throughout Japan.

This time, we wrapped the tenugui to look like fresh picked corn, bringing the design to life.
Playful and simple, and just as multi-functional as any tenugui, of course!
