The Wall Street Journal | We Know Better: Diet Can Lead to Longer Lives. Here’s How to Make That Happen

An article by Prof. Valter Longo and Sebastian Brandhorst, published on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the United States, reflecting on the present and future of health, prevention, and longevity.

Diet is one of the key pillars of healthy longevity, alongside physical activity and sleep, and it offers one of the greatest opportunities to improve health and extend healthy lifespan.
Yet this message still isn't reaching enough people. What should we do?

We need to rethink healthcare: treat food as medicine, create a new category of health professionals focused on nutrition and healthy longevity, and integrate evidence-based nutrition programs—such as 12-hour time-restricted eating and the fasting mimicking diet—that people can realistically sustain over the long term.

“The Taste of Longevity: Recipes and Beyond” - by the Valter Longo Foundation in collaboration with the Create Cures Foundation

“During the summers I spent in Molochio, my parents’ village in Southern Italy, at least every other day, for lunch or dinner we ate pasta and “vaianeia” —a relatively small portion of pasta served with a large amount of vegetables, especially whole green beans in their pods.” (Prof. Valter Longo)

Inspired by the principles of Professor Valter Longo’s Longevity Diet, this book is a journey through nutrition, health, culinary traditions, and food culture. Created in collaboration with internationally renowned chef Niko Romito, nutrition and longevity experts, professional chefs, and passionate home cooks, it brings together simple, delicious, and healthy recipes, alongside stories and traditions from different parts of the world.

Proceeds from the book support the mission of the Valter Longo Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing research, education, and healthy longevity. Funds raised are used to support scientific research and public education initiatives, free nutrition and health education programs for schools and families, as well as nutritional and healthcare services—provided free of charge or at reduced cost—for individuals facing economic hardship and health challenges.
