As it voted for a historic end to pretext police stops, the Los Angeles City Council also beefed up funding to extract police from mental health calls, replacing them with unarmed, trained clinicians. Since 2024, the teams handled more than 20,000 calls. This is what worked for!
LA’s program that diverts mental health crisis calls away from police to expand Trained clinicians with the city’s Unarmed Model of Crisis Response have handled over 20,000 calls since 2024.
