This July 4th marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As we look back, we must also look forward because how we imagine the next 250 years matters just as much. A future that includes everyone doesn’t happen by accident. Reparations is how we build it.
In partnership with , we commissioned three artists to make the case for reparations through powerful visual art and to join the Week of Repair alongside artists, leaders, and organizations committed to one truth: our systems can’t be fixed without reparations.
Reparations isn’t a political debate. It’s an internationally recognized framework for how societies heal. Most people think of it as financial compensation but the full definition includes material and systemic repair for those who experienced harm, their families, and society as a whole.
Applied to U.S. chattel slavery and its enduring legacies — racial violence, Jim Crow, lynching, high maternal mortality rate for Black women, redlining, gentrification, mass incarceration, the war on drugs, and more — reparations means facing the gross human rights violations of slavery, naming it, taking responsibility, and making it right.
Federal reparations for Black and African Americans wouldn’t just repair the past. It would create a culture of repair whose benefits extend to everyone.
In the words of :
“Slavery is not confined to history. Its effects continue to shape disparities in wealth, health, education, and the well-being of Black communities today. When we talk about reparations, we’re talking about repairing harm and investing in generations to come.”
