Being a radio frequency engineer, I’ve always been fascinated by radio astronomy.

Here is a very dull illustration of radio signals from the pulsar **CP 1919** at **318 MHz** in the UHF range.

There is really nothing interesting about this at all, and yet it brings me a certain amount of joy.

This banana is approximately a 1/4 wavelength. 🍌

I had to take a picture. Simple instructions… simply ignored! 😅

Over the last 20 years of living near California, in Oregon, I’ve noticed something curious.

People from California seem very fond of putting **“the”** in front of highways, especially interstates.

For example:

“The traffic was brutal on **the I-5** this morning.”
“I was heading south on **the 605**.”
“He was cruising at 65 mph on **the 99**.”

This habit is both fascinating and mildly irritating to me.

So I have two questions:

1. Why do Californians feel the need to do this?
2. Are they aware that they seem to be the only ones doing it?
