"Underwater portrait with longtime collaborator Annika. What began as a simple idea became an exercise in trust and adaptation, as working in water introduced unpredictable light, fluid movement, and the need for patience and precision. Every frame was shaped by breath, buoyancy, and timing, deepening the collaboration beyond words. The goal was to embrace that unpredictability and create a portrait that feels suspended, intimate, and otherworldly."

"This is a small Maui house party where our host brought five of us Geminis together to celebrate our birthdays. The being in this image interested me, and we connected easily and have stayed in touch. I lived in Hawai'i for nine years and have since returned three times to make more photographs."

"This photograph is one of many in a series called "Holdup in the Hood". The project is part documentation and part interpretation of a collaborative, after-school arts curriculum based on self-portraiture. I co-wrote and taught the curriculum with my teaching partner, Meda Rago, for 13 years. The project took place in Manchester, Pittsburgh, PA., and engaged young students from the local public and charter school in the community. The complete body of work incorporates formal portraiture, collage, drawings, recycled photographs and print media while exploring dimensions of self and “Other” including race, class and gender. This particular photograph has been juried and curated for exhibition in venues across the country."
