It's great to see more Oxy organizations including disability in their activism! But it's also important to go about it in a sensitive way! Here's a quick description as to why the term "people with disabilities" tends to be the better choice over "differently-abled."

Hi everyone! We are a new club at Oxy that serves to provide a space that allows students with disabilities to relate to one another and discuss their identities as well as advocate for disability rights both on and off campus. Being disabled is often incredibly alienating, and many struggle simply to identify themselves as disabled, even though 20% of the US population has a disability. This is especially true of people our age, as there are certain societal expectations of us that we cannot necessarily adhere to. In addition, we will advocate for disability rights, centering around accessibility, intersectionality, and awareness.
