Toy Story 5 is in theaters, and if your family has seen it (or is planning to), it opens the door to some surprisingly rich conversations.

The story is "toy meets tech." Bonnie, now a little older, is struggling to make friends, so her parents get her a tablet to help her connect with other kids. It works, sort of. She connects online, but slowly drifts from imaginative play and even from the people sitting right next to her. There's a moment where she and her mom are in the same car, and her whole demeanor changes because of messages her mom can't see. It's a small scene that says a lot about how technology can isolate us even when we're in the same room.

Woven through the film are themes that line up beautifully with a biblical worldview: that we were made for relationship, that we're embodied beings designed to be together in person, that imaginative play is part of how God made children to steward the world, and that real love is willing to risk rejection for someone else's good.
