According to CDC, less than 10% of our daily calories should be from added sugars. Naturally occurring sugars such as those in fruit or milk are not added sugars. Added sugars include brown sugar, maple sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, honey, malt syrup, and molasses.
The Nutrition Facts label on packaged foods was updated in 2016 to reflect updated scientific information. Manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual sales were required to update their labels by January 1, 2020; manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales were required to update their labels by January 1, 2021.
One of the major updates was added sugars in grams and as a percent daily value% (%DV) is now required on the label. The refreshed design and updated information will make it easier for us to make informed food choices that contribute to lifelong healthy eating habits.
