We recently had the opportunity to work with Leadership Lufkin Alumni Association on a project that transformed the Grace Dunn Dog Park and the results speak for themselves (check out the before & after 👇).

The Grace Dunn Dog Park was originally a Leadership Lufkin Class of 33 (2014–2015) service project. The class selected the dog park as its community project after reviewing a City of Lufkin needs assessment from 2009 that identified a dog park as one of the community's top priorities. Then the team raised funds to make it happen! We enjoyed partnering with them and Lufkin Parks & Recreation to give it a much needed facelift! From scrubbing old sponsorship boards to repairing fence handles and even repainting some the water fountains and waste disposal boxes! 💚🐕🐾🚯

♻️ ECO Camp Day 3: Litter Prevention and Waste Reduction ♻️

On day 3 ECO Camp campers learned that one of the best ways to help the environment starts with simple everyday choices!

We talked about ways we can reduce waste before it ever reaches a landfill. One example? Each camper received a reusable water bottle to use throughout the week. By choosing reusable bottles instead of single-use plastic water bottles, our 30 campers helped eliminate the need for approximately 120 disposable bottles during camp week!

Campers then put their stewardship into action by participating in a litter cleanup at Chamber Park. Armed with gloves, grabbers, and trash bags, they worked together to help make our community a cleaner and more beautiful place around the splash pads, playgrounds, pickleball courts and other high traffic areas that just need a little extra love!

The fun didn't stop there! Our friends at the Naranjo Museum of Natural History joined us to demonstrate how everyday items can be given a second life through a little bit of creativity. Using recycled and repurposed materials like cardboard, bottle caps, old Christmas cards, and even a few "ancient artifacts" (otherwise known as pennies 😄) campers designed and built their own fidget spinners. Thank you for the fun science lesson and showing just how creative we can get!

We finished the day by making seed bombs with recycled newspaper and native, pollinator friendly wildflower seeds the kiddos got to take home with them at the end of camp! Although our hands were so messy we did not get enough photos of the fun! We left instructions if you would like to try it out at home! 🌷🐝

If you can't recycle it, try to reduce it. If you can't reduce it, find a way to reuse it. We are so proud of these young environmental stewards and the enthusiasm they continue to show throughout the summer and hopefully through the rest of their lives!
