This headline is exactly how misinformation hardens into “truth.” In 2019, the NIH quietly redefined hair relaxers and keratin smoothing treatments under a new category called “hair straighteners.” This was done in thier "Sister Study" of 59,000 women, yet only 7.4% where black women with 86% being white women. They admitted inside the paper that this change could explain why their results differed from earlier studies, specifically the Black Women’s Health Study which was and still the largest ever cohort of 50,000 all black women ever done — because keratin treatments weren’t even on the market during those earlier epidemiology studies, which showed null(No) associations of breast cancer or fibroids and rekaxers when relaxers alone were surveyed. That disclaimer never made the headlines. But the damage did. The NIH had no authority to rename or reclassify cosmetic products — that authority belongs to the FDA.
