Making your own cleaning products can save money and reduce waste—but a few common mistakes can make them less effective than you think.

Here are three things I always recommend:

✔️ Check the pH before mixing ingredients. Some combinations can cancel each other out, and certain combinations (for example, mixing vinegar with bleach) can even produce dangerous gases.

✔️ Measure your ingredients. Cleaning solutions are designed to work at specific concentrations, so guessing can reduce their performance.

✔️ Use distilled or filtered water when possible. Minerals in tap water can affect how some homemade cleaners perform and how long they last.

A little chemistry goes a long way toward safer, more effective cleaning.
