Happy Juneteenth!

Today we celebrate June 19th, 1865, which is the day when the final enslaved African-Americans (in Texas) were told that slavery ended – a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. An important note: while the Emancipation Proclamation technically gave African-Americans freedom from slavery they were “strongly encouraged” to still stay at their former owner’s plantations and work for a “negotiated wage”. It would still take a full century later for African-Americans to have access without discrimination to the right to vote (Voting Rights Act of 1965).

Here at AP, we proudly honor Juneteenth in celebration, remembrance, and recognition of all the enslaved African-Americans who should have never had to “earn” their freedom or prove they were Americans.
