Frequently viewed in the background inside the Capitol Rotunda during todays inauguration is a statue of Abraham Lincoln sculpted from life by Wisconsin native Lavina (Vinnie) Ream. She was a teenager when she began the project and was the first woman to receive a public art commission from congress. Ream was born in the Wisconsin Territory settlement of Madison and received early art instruction from Ho Chunk neighbors on the Isthmus.
