OFS Legacy
The Operation Fresh Start story began in 1970 when Jack Osteraas started raising money to buy an old home on Madison’s East Side with the goal of hiring a group of young, untrained adults to remodel it. The young people he hired were not working and had not earned a high school diploma. Together they completed that first house and along the way learned important employability skills, earned their diplomas through a partnership with East High School, and gained experience to help find and keep better paying jobs.
While OFS has grown over the years to include conservation work and has added new programs for high school graduates, our mission remains the same: provide young adults an opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge, and habits they will need to be successful in their lives.
