The Untouchables

Lately, I’ve found myself noticing just how much our area has grown. Everywhere you look, there are new restaurants, new businesses, and new opportunities. It’s exciting to see. But it also made me think about the places that have quietly stood the test of time, the businesses that have been here year after year, serving the same community they helped build.

In August of 1983, three local businessmen took a chance and opened a restaurant at the corner of Highway 16 and Highway 150. They called it The Untouchables. Their goal wasn’t to build a chain or become famous. They simply wanted to serve great food, treat people right, and create a place where friends and families could gather around the table.

Four years later, in 1987, I walked through those doors looking for a job as a busboy. I swept floors, cleared tables, washed dishes, stocked supplies, and learned every part of the business from the ground up. In 1997, I became a partner, and in 2004, I was blessed with the opportunity to purchase the restaurant.

Looking back now, I realize God was writing a story that I couldn’t see at the time.

Today, The Untouchables has been serving this community for more than 43 years.

Over those four decades, we’ve watched children grow into parents, and now many of those parents are bringing their own children through our doors. We’ve celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, little league championships, graduations, first dates, retirement parties, and countless family dinners. We’ve shared in happy moments and difficult ones. Somewhere along the way, many of our customers stopped feeling like customers and started feeling like family.

We’ve also weathered our share of storms. Economic recessions. Rising food costs. Labor shortages. A global pandemic. Through every challenge, this community continued to support us, and because of that, we’re still here today.

As a lifelong Catawba County resident, this restaurant has never just been my job. It’s been my life’s work. It’s allowed me to employ local people, raise my family, and give back through schools, churches, first responders, youth sports, charities, and so many community events over the years. I’ve always believed that when a community supports you, you have a responsibility to support it right back.

The next time you’re deciding where to eat, I hope you’ll remember the places that have been part of your family’s story for years.

The restaurants where your children spilled their first sweet tea, where your ball team celebrated a championship, where you’ve gathered after church, or where the person behind the counter has watched your family grow up.

Those memories aren’t built in a few months. They take decades.

Locally owned restaurants don’t just serve food. They provide local jobs, sponsor little league teams, donate to school fundraisers, support churches and nonprofits, help first responders, and reinvest their earnings right back into the communities they call home.

Every new restaurant deserves the opportunity to write its own story, and I sincerely wish every one of them success. But I also hope there will always be room in our community for the businesses that have faithfully served generation after generation.
