This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On January 2nd, 2024, two tragic shipwrecks occurred off the coast of Tunisia, resulting in the deaths of at least 27 individuals, including a newborn. Members of the Tunisian National Guard rescued 83 survivors, all refugees from various sub-Saharan African nations.

In a separate incident on the same day, a boat carrying at least 20 asylum seekers sank while traveling from Libya to Italy. Authorities fear that all passengers, including women and children, may have perished.

The International Organization for Migration reports that since 2014, over 24,500 people have either died or gone missing in the central Mediterranean while attempting to reach Europe. Most of these journeys originate from Libya or Tunisia. All reporting credit goes to Democracy Now (see link)

Sanborn Analytics issues this maritime security bulletin to advise the maritime shipping community and the armed naval forces at sea regarding recent developments in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region.

Incident Summary:

On December 31st, 2024, U.S. and British warplanes conducted multiple airstrikes on Sana’a, Yemen, reportedly in response to Yemeni operations against Israel.

According to Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television network:

Three airstrikes targeted the September 21st Park in northwestern Sana’a, a site previously associated with the First Armored Division.

Additional airstrikes hit the al-Ardi complex in al-Safiyah District and the 22nd Military Industrial Complex in al-Thawra District, with a total of eight strikes reported.

Sanborn Analytics confirms that Yemeni Houthi forces retaliated by launching drones and missiles targeting the U.S. naval vessel USS Harry S. Truman. However, neither side achieved a successful strike in their retaliatory efforts.
