A 17-year-old’s rail archive of trains far & near.

Top Down.

After an early morning in Boston photographing airplanes, I took an opportunity with a few friends to go see BO-1, the nearly defunct Boston Local.

While waiting for the local to move back South into the capital, an inbound commuter train carrying Thursday’s lunch rush would provide a photo opportunity from the top of the Salem “Intermodal” Station parking garage.

Snow Place Like Home. The dormant duo of MBTA Russell Snow Plows have found a new, temporary home in Carroll County, NH. New Hampshire Northcoast recently adopted MBTA(X) 2740 and 2746 for their own snow-clearing convenience along the 43-mile Conway Branch between Ossipiee and Rollinsford, NH.

Dubbed, “Plow Extra 1801”, the duo of orange flashed up and down the Eastern border of New Hampshire (and Southern Maine if you really want to get definitive!) sporting their aging “T” marks along with MBTA’s flashy “Snow Plow” decals.

Sandwiched between two loafs of orange was NHN 1801, a GP18 built in 1960 for the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific where she served until it’s demise in 1980. In 1985, New England Southern (NEGS), gave new life to 1801. Now NEGS 503, she served Southern and Central New Hampshire until 2006. By August 2007, she was on property of her new owners and has remained ever since. As of now, NHN 1801 serves a handful of different tasks. With the lack of ACSES II PTC, 1801 unfortunately cannot LEAD sand trains into Boston, however, is still utilized between Ossipee and Dover for local power. 1801 will occasionally fill in on sand trains, when substitution for GP38-2s are needed.

After a week of inspections, and blistering negative degree temperatures, the “Fair Weather Railroad” took the plows for a spin down the Conway Branch. Although plowing wasn’t needed, the wings were still extended to push back banks on the east and west sides of the tracks. After cleaning up the branch, they hit the sand pit to push back any ice or snow that may have accumulated during wave of -40° temperatures that devoured NH.

This was definitely a fun one, despite playing catch-up for most of the time. But I was glad to see familiar faces and smiles all around. The fantastic crew of NHN definitely had fun with this one.

Canada-land.

About a week ago I took a trip out to Buffalo, NY to visit Patrick Wortman Photography to shoot some trains uaround the Buffalo Area. A joke hinting that Patrick never has seen trains in Canada turned into a day trip to see CN, GO Transit and Via Rail’s Canadian!
