Donald M. Schmidt

Donald M. Schmidt, 84, of Bismarck, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026, in Bismarck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 2026, at Ascension Catholic Church, 1825 S. 3rd St., Bismarck, with Father Russell Kovash officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Weigel Funeral Home, 309 4th Ave. NW, Mandan. A Rosary and Parish Vigil will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Donald Matthew Schmidt, known as Donnie to his family and friends, was born on October 11, 1941, in Solen, North Dakota, to John and Bertha (Maier) Schmidt. He was raised in Solen, where he attended school before serving his country in the United States Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Following his honorable discharge after two years of service, Donnie returned home to ranch alongside his father and brother, John. He eventually took over the family operation, dedicating his life to the land until retiring in 2010.

Donnie was first married to Emma Jean Day, and together they welcomed two sons, Don Jr. and Mike. Emma Jean passed away in 1983.

Later, Donnie found love again when he married Bernice Hellman. Together they blended their families and built a wonderful life. Although they retired to Bismarck, Donnie could rarely stay away from the ranch. He made countless trips back to lend a hand, always happy to help.

Donnie was a member of the American Legion and the Solen Rural Fire Department. He was a hardworking rancher through and through, and farming was simply his way of life.

Donnie enjoyed watching classic westerns, taking in a movie (even if it meant going by himself), packing up for a picnic, and meeting family and friends for a good meal. He appreciated life's simple pleasures and treasured the time spent with those he loved.

He will be sorely missed by his wife, Bernice; his children, Tammy (David) Acuff, Don (Tyann) Schmidt Jr., Michael (Rolenthea) Schmidt, Jesse (Lauree) Hellman, Scott (Kandie) Hellman, Tracy (Ryan) Meschke, and Kurt (Nerissa) Hellman; his sister, Lillian (Wayne) Brewster; sister-in-law, Elaine Schmidt; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Frances Helbling

Frances Helbling, 92, of Bismarck, passed away on July 1, 2026, at Missouri Slope Nursing Home in Bismarck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, at Ascension Catholic Church, 1825 South 3rd Street, Bismarck, with Father Russell Kovash officiating. Burial will follow at Mandan Union Cemetery.

Frances was born on February 19, 1934, in Flasher, North Dakota, the daughter of Adam and Anna (Berger) Schaff. She attended school in Fallon. On October 19, 1953, Frances married Terrance "Terry" Helbling. Together they farmed near St. Anthony before moving to Mandan.

Frances was a natural homemaker. She loved hosting large family gatherings and made sure no one ever left her home hungry or thirsty. The “pop fridge” in the garage was always fully stocked and open to anyone who walked through the door. Company was always welcome, and there was never a shortage of food. During the holidays, Frances and Terry made their famous meatballs with all the trimmings. Frances was also known for her homemade buns, pfeffernüsse cookies, and cinnamon twists, family favorites that everyone looked forward to.

Frances' love for her family and her caring nature also made her an excellent caretaker. She worked at Mandan Hospital for 25 years before retiring.

Frances was a gifted embroiderer. Her beautifully embroidered dish towels became treasured keepsakes, as she lovingly gifted them to her children and grandchildren for special occasions. Every grandchild and great-grandchild who visited her home knew they would find the best toys in the old yellow LEGO bucket kept in her closet. Frances delighted in watching them play on the living room floor. As they grew older, she especially enjoyed gathering around the table to play cards, hear about their lives, and create lasting memories together.

She also enjoyed camping, gardening, working on puzzles, and spending time with her family and friends.

Blessed to share her life are her daughter, Diane of Bismarck; sons, David (Marlene) of Mandan, Dennis (Anne) of Mandan, Duane (LaRae) of Mandan, and Dale (Sherry) of Bismarck; grandchildren, Kristen (Darren) Weiler, Eric Helbling (Andrea Forde), Darin Helbling (Brittany Boehm), Kim (Austen) Beck, Mike Helbling (Tammy Spivack), Christopher (Shawna) Helbling, Amanda (Eric) Varriano, Jason (Kelsi) Helbling, Emily (Channing) F***h, and Dylan (Dani) Helbling; 22 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Alvina Schaff and Delores Morris.

James Heinle Obituary Jun 27, 2026 - Weigel Funeral and Cremation Service 06/30/2026

James Heinle

James “Jim” Heinle, age 90, of Regan, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, in a Mandan care center.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at St. John Church in Hebron, ND. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the St. John Cemetery in Hebron.

Jim was born on December 30, 1935, in Bismarck, to Edwin and Louise (Kindsvogel) Heinle. He was raised in Hebron, ND where he attended school. For more than 30 years, Jim worked as a truck driver before semi-retiring to a small farm near Regan, ND that he proudly owned and ranched for the 26 years. In addition to cattle, he owned several mules that he would take on yearly trail rides. Jim could often be seen riding the ditches by his farm on his ATV. Jim was known for speaking his mind and never pretending to be anything other than himself. Animated, honest, and undeniably stubborn at times, he lived life on his own terms and earned the respect of those who knew him.

Jim loved being outdoors tending to his animals. One unlikely companion was a stray barn cat. Though the cat never allowed Jim to get close, he faithfully made sure it had food and fresh water. Even after his health declined, one of Jim's greatest concerns was that the cat would still be cared for when he no longer could make the walk to the barn. His compassion quietly revealed the gentle heart behind his rugged exterior. Selling his cattle the day before the first snowfall in 2025, was one of the hardest decisions Jim ever made, marking the close of a chapter that had brought him tremendous pride and fulfillment.

Jim is survived by his children, Lyle Heinle of Hebron, Deborah (Don) Kates of Mandan, and Beverly Brackel of Casper, WY; six grandchildren, Christopher (Christy) Heinle of St. Cloud, MN, Derek (Darlene) Miller of Mandan, Dallas (Tina) Miller of Chicago IL, Keaton Miller of Bismarck, Adam (Chas) Schaff of Casper, WY, & Robert (Katie) Brackel of Casper, WY; 8 great grandchildren, Caden Heinle, Tyler Peabody, Edward Weisinger, Aidan Winn, Olivia Bitz, Bliss Markel, Cassius Miller, Treyton Wimber, Alden & Victoria Triplett, Judi Branson, & Isabella Brackel; sister, Kathy Schneider of Spearfish, SD; brother, Dale (Connie) Heinle of Hebron; & nieces and nephews, Justin, Jeff, Emily, Gene, Tom, Sharon, and Lori.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother-in-law, Robert Schneider; and many aunts and uncles.
