Replacing hopelessness with hope through biblical counseling

Can a Christian struggle with anxiety or depression?

The answer is yes.

Many faithful believers throughout Scripture experienced deep sorrow, discouragement, grief, fear, and anguish.
David poured out his struggles in the Psalms.
Jeremiah wept over the devastation around him.

An entire book of the Bible—Lamentations—is dedicated to grief and suffering.

Why?
Because we live in a fallen world.A world marked by sin, death, loss, disappointment, and pain.

Christians are not immune to these realities.

But there is a critical difference between the Christian and the non-Christian. The trials of life are not meant to drive the believer into despair.

They are meant to drive him to Christ.

To the One who is our Rock.
Our Redeemer.
Our refuge in times of trouble.

Suffering has a way of exposing our idols and reminding us that we were never meant to carry life’s burdens alone.

God often uses trials to sanctify us—to teach us to trust Him more deeply and to stop looking to ourselves as the ultimate solution.

The goal is not self-reliance.
The goal is greater dependence on Christ.

A decision can feel right and still be unwise.

Our emotions are real, but they are not infallible.
God calls us to make decisions based on truth, wisdom, and biblical principles, not feelings alone.

Your brain and your mind are not the same thing.

One of the most important distinctions Scripture makes about human beings is that we are both body and soul.

In Genesis 2,
God created man as a physical and spiritual being.

That means your brain and your mind are related—but they are not the same thing.

Your brain is part of your body.
It is physical.
Material.
Part of what Scripture often calls the outer man.

But your mind is something different.
The mind is a faculty of the soul.
It belongs to what Scripture calls the inner man.

This is why the Bible speaks so often about renewing the mind, setting the mind on things above, loving God with the mind, and taking thoughts captive to obey Christ.

The mind is not merely electrical activity in the brain.

It is the thinking, reasoning, believing, worshiping aspect of the inner person.

Biblical Christianity recognizes both realities:
We are embodied creatures with physical brains.
And we are spiritual beings with souls that think, desire, worship, and respond to God.

Understanding that distinction helps us better understand ourselves, our struggles, and our need for Christ.

Many people focus on changing behaviors while ignoring the heart beneath them.

Lasting change happens when we address the desires, beliefs, and worship that drive our actions.

The gospel reaches deeper than behavior modification.
