BREAKING: Former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger is sharply criticizing Donald Trump over his reported involvement in getting an American player's World Cup red card overturned.

The controversy has sparked outrage well beyond the United States.

Posting on X, Kinzinger argued that if Trump had remained silent, FIFA likely would have reversed the red card after a routine "review" without drawing widespread attention.

"Had Trump not said anything, FIFA probably would have reversed the red card after 'review' and kept the contact secret."

He then added:

"But he can’t help himself. He’s a p**s poor criminal who can’t hide it. That will ultimately be his undoing… crypto, Qatar, his sons 'ventures' on and on."

Kinzinger's comments came after reports that Trump personally intervened following the red card shown to U.S. men's national team striker Folarin Balogun during a World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The dismissal, issued after Balogun stepped on an opponent's ankle, carried an automatic one-match suspension that would have ruled him out of the Round of 16 match against Belgium.

According to the account, Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino and urged him to reconsider the suspension. FIFA ultimately lifted the one-game ban, making Balogun eligible to play.

Belgium has strongly objected to the ruling and has appealed FIFA's decision, arguing that overturning the suspension undermines confidence in the tournament's fairness.

Kinzinger contended that Trump drew unnecessary attention to the situation by publicly acknowledging his involvement. In his view, had Trump stayed quiet, the decision might have attracted far less scrutiny. Kinzinger further argued that Trump's willingness to discuss the episode publicly reflects what he sees as a pattern of self-incriminating behavior.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump defended his actions, saying:

"All I did was ask for a review because I didn’t think it was a foul. I didn’t tell him what to do. I can’t tell him what to do."

Supporters of the criticism argue that Americans want the national team to succeed on the field without questions surrounding the legitimacy of the result. They contend that if the United States defeats Belgium, the controversy over FIFA's decision will remain part of the conversation.

Critics say Trump has transformed what should have been a celebration of fair competition into a dispute centered on political influence and the integrity of international sports.
