I’m pleased to announce my upcoming session for the Arizona Music Educators Association, Choral Division (ACE), at their conference January 30 & 31!

Those who know me understand my passion for the use of unified, more formal vowels in choral singing. “Owl or Howl - The Importance of Unified Vowels in Choral Singing” is a collection of tips and tricks developed over my career that enhances and matures the choral sound of school-aged singers.

Sharing this perspective with my Arizona colleagues is truly an honor and I greatly appreciate the opportunity to lend my experiences in this area.

Last Monday, I had the privilege of introducing “Give Me A Song” by local composer and fellow music educator, , at the Benjamin Franklin HS Fall Concert as a closing group number. The piece is set to be published in the spring. Lots of interesting meter changes, full of joy, and a medium difficulty level. I’ll post a video of the piece’s performance soon!

That’s us! We always bring learning and enlightenment to students, build their self confidence, “herd cats,” all the while believing that our students are capable of so much more than they can ever imagine.

My truth for this was providing the opportunity for students to sing masterworks: Vivaldi Gloria, Requiems by Mozart & Durufle, Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes, Rutter When Icicles Hang and more. The sense of achievement my singers felt was enormous, especially when they understood these works are most often performed by college level choirs and beyond.

Keep believing, tugging, dragging, pushing and poking. You’ll not only change the lives of your students, but you’ll find that you, too, have been changed for the better!

This wonderful quote was shared at the Carol Krueger workshop I attended last week. It’s what we do as individuals (for me that would be troubleshooting technology issues, which I know nothing about) and what we teach our students on a daily basis.

Think about the start of every year: it can be as simple as classroom management, solfège syllables, or scales and grows in magnitude once we’ve learned those things. It progresses to the different minor scales and arpeggios, audiation, applying sounds to notes on the page and on and on. The scaffolding or spiraling of skills demonstrates this perfectly.

As you evaluate the past year and look towards the next, our occupational hazard so to speak, think about sharing this quote with your students, especially if they feel they’re not “getting it” right away. Our practice is what builds us toward individual degrees of performance practice.
