Darla D. Rooks was born May 15, 1971, at the Martin Hospital and not-so-gracefully bowed out there June 12. After all, if you’re going to make an entrance & an exit, you might as well use the same door. Anyone expecting a quiet, predictable obituary clearly never met her.
As a teenager, she battled cancer and unexpectedly won, sort of. The cancer left her unable to have children. Darla’s response was essentially, ‘that’s cute. Watch this.’ she went on to help raise everyone else’s. She became a safe space to any child that needed or wanted one. Whether she was your DeeDee, Dee, or Darly; if you called her, she always answered with love, questionable advice, and occasionally a plan that sounded much better before anyone thought it through. She loved fiercely, protected relentlessly, and always made room for one more. She knew that sometimes the best way to connect with a child was not with words but joining them in their world; and she did that better than anyone. She spent countless nights reading Skippyjon Jones, watching cartoons, spoiling her beloved dolly, and creating memories with all of her kids. Among those she cherished most were Cody & Savannah Pettit, who were not her children by blood but were always hers by choice.
through life, dee never stopped building family. She knew the heart ache of losing the people who helped shape you. She also knew the gift of being loved by those who chose you. One of those gifts was Sheryl Frazier. In the absence of her own mother, Sheryl became the mother she chose and the mother that chose her right back. Their bond was a testament to her belief that family can also be found in those that show up, stay, and love without conditions.
Deedee always showed up for you. If you needed driving lessons, she’d lend her car and let you drive your heart out. In hindsight, she was a bad teacher, because that six-year-old ended up in the ditch. We should probably mention she was the baby of four, and her father called her ‘dollar’. Let this serve as a perfect example of why- most likely everything she did ended up being expensive. She also introduced at least one eight-year-old to Salt-N-Pepa far earlier than any responsible adult should have. Needless to say, that child’s mother was not particularly proud that her daughter could sing every word of ‘push it’ better than reciting her bible verses. Sorry mom.
Darla was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace & donna rooks; her sister Terri Ramirez; her brother ‘rocky’ rooks; and her niece, angel potter. She is survived by blood- a sister Tammi; nephews, David (Regina) Duncan and Cody (Mai) Rooks; nieces, Britni (John) Carroll and Carrie Wilson; and family she adored. Survived by love Josh Pettit, Pam Pettit, Lorissa Stout, Tammy Vancil, Jennifer and Jami Gilbertson; and countless friends that were more like family, and kids that always had a place to go.
Somewhere beyond this life, Darla is undoubtedly riding horses, exploring places she’s been told to stay out of, watching Scooby-doo, reciting the words of finding nemo to anyone who will listen whether they asked for it or not, and making sure everyone knows dolly was the bestest girl.
For her final adventure, Darly will be escorted by Cody rooks, Cody Pettit, Josh Pettit, Reed Rooks, Lukes Rooks, and Tyler McClure; who have graciously agreed to join her one last time. Given her questionable plans and spontaneous detours, we wish them luck keeping her headed in the right direction. Honorary escorts are Brent Vincent, Lucas Young, Jeff Wright, and all the kids who ever called her when they needed comfort, advice, a place to land, or even a bad idea. Her greatest accomplishment was never something she achieved, it was always the people she loved.
Until we meet again, we’ll carry her laughter, her love, her stories, and the countless ways she made each of us feel seen, loved, and at home. In the meantime, we’ll do our best to follow her favorite advice: ‘just keep swimming’.
Pallbearers to serve: Josh Pettit, Cody Pettit, Cody Rooks, Reed Rooks, Lukes Rooks, and Tyler McClure.
