For the last few weeks, we've been sharing suggestions for the individual anti-trafficking advocate. From spreading awareness to volunteering, there are a plethora of ways to join the work against human trafficking. Today, we have a very specific way you can help: support legislation that protects survivors.
Senate Bill 183 is a bill that aims to expand expungement opportunities for survivors of Human Trafficking. Many times, survivors of human trafficking will pick up criminal charges while they are being trafficked. Currently, Ohio law requires someone to be charged with loitering and /or prostitution in order to qualify for expungement. While these are charges that are frequently acquired by s*x trafficking survivors, they are not typically seen with survivors of labor trafficking. Expanding the expungement bill would make it more accessible to survivors of labor trafficking, who are in equal need of legal assistance.
Today, we'd like to share two ways you can support this bill. Individually, we invite you all to sign the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center's petition! If you're part of an organization that would like to show support as a single entity, IJPC also has an organizational letter of support that you can sign onto as an organization as a whole. We've proudly signed on, and we'd like to invite you to do the same.
