Many times our children with trauma histories don't have words, they have behaviors. We need to listen to their behaviors which is their language. Listen as much to what isn't said as to what is said. Children are shouting at us with what they need; we aren't listening--we are only focusing on trying to ascertain behavioral compliance. Listen to their behavior and discern the function of it. That's the path to connection and then to healing.
