How this all began

It began with a letter. My 95-year old father-in-law brought it to our house, wanting to know what it all meant. As I read through the letter, and deciphered the legalese for him, I watched as his whole demeanor changed. He had been a farmer for his whole adult life, and had weathered more than his fair share of storms, but this was something different. The farm directly south of his was being turned into a solar farm.

You get used to certain ideas over time, he said. He had accepted the fact that farmland in our county was, eventually, likely to be turned into neighborhoods. But this was different. He asked, and I showed him some pictures of “solar farms” - although, truth be told, neither of us could really see anything much “farm-like” in those photos.

When the plans were finally revealed, it was worse than we thought. The “farm” would be surrounded by a seven foot tall security fence - a fence that would sit mere feet from the south property-line of my father-in-law’s farm.

We decided we needed to fight this. The folks in the neighboring subdivision were ready to fight as well.
