Is your goal really your goal? Maybe you should quit, maybe it’s not worth the effort. How do you know?
This exercise from Dan John is one of the best things you can do in the gym. Decide if it’s really worth it. Draw up four quadrants with Success and Failure towards your goal on one axis and Good and Bad consequences on the other.
We all know the good stuff of success, you’ll feel better and everyone will think you’re awesome! We know the pain of failure too, letting ourselves and others down.
But what is Good about Failing? What will you like about not succeeding? What is Bad about Succeeding? What will suck about winning? We miss this side of the coin and it’s important to see the situation clearly. It’s not all good to win, you’ll have to give up some stuff. Is it worth it?
And you’ll enjoy parts of failing too, are you sure you’re willing to give up these things? I joke with clients often that there are two ways to hit a goal- hit it or quit and decide you didn’t really want it anyway and now you can stop beating yourself up about it.
Draw yourself some quadrants!

What if you forgot everything you know about strength training?
You wake up with your mind erased, and you decide you want to be healthy and stronger. Where would you begin? What things would you do with your body? How would you know you’re making progress?
This is a useful thought because it sifts through the information overload that constantly bombards us. It used to be true that people didn’t have enough good training information, but now it’s more common for people to have too much. Erasing your brain and simplifying the process can remind you what you’re trying to accomplish. Doing more over time.
The information overload paralyzes us, as we look for the perfect method, or newest exercise, and there’s always something else that we are not doing. We then end up floundering about, and stopping and starting and not trusting our own intuition. You probably do know the answer to your problem. Are you doing what you already know to be good for you? The reason you’re not making progress probably isn’t because there is some fact out there that you have yet to acquire.
So forget everything you know, and simplify the process as much as possible. Can you do more than you did yesterday? How do you continue to make progress? Just don’t stop training!
