We celebrated our first “last session” of Conversational English classes, lead by our teacher, Mrs. Shannon Schrope with an international festival.

We enjoyed food, snacks, and desserts from Nicaragua, Brazil, Costa Rica, México, England, Ireland, Central Europe, and the southern USA — so many tasty treats!

In the coastal Florida city of Indian Harbour Beach, the Church for the Beach was rocked by the immigration detention of Pastor Wilber Marenco, the first case directly affecting a member of that predominantly non-Hispanic congregation this year. Pastor Joel Tooley, who leads a different evangelical church in Florida and knows Marenco, said his friend is “somebody who followed all the rules and did everything right — still he was detained.” “His story really resonated with people who may have voted for this administration and now are kind of caught in that in-between space,” Tooley said. Eight pastors, regardless of political ideology, told NBC News that what they are witnessing goes against Trump’s campaign promise to prioritize deporting those in the country illegally and focus on those who have committed serious crimes.
